Sniffspot is a platform that allows individuals to rent out their backyards to dog owners looking for a private area to exercise their pets. The prices for each space vary and are typically charged per dog per hour. It is the responsibility of the volunteer to pay the cost of the SniffSpot.

Here are some tips if you’re considering using one for the program dog in your care. It needs to be consistent with the rules for program dogs, which means it must be fully fenced. It is important to note that Sniffspots are only for exercising the dog(s) in your care. They are not a place for dog play dates, to meet other animals, or to swim in pools.

All dogs must be over six months old and fully vaccinated to play at a Sniffspot. If you need clarification on whether your dog is fully vaccinated, please contact Puppy Program staff. Puppies under six months old are NOT allowed at Sniffspots.

Guide for using a Sniffspot with a program dog:

  1. You can browse listings in your area on the Sniffspot app or website. Each listing provides information about the space, including yard size, fence height at the lowest point, available amenities, and any visible or audible surroundings (dogs, animals, people).
  2. When searching for a possible location for the dog to play, it is important to pay attention to the fence description and pictures provided. The area must be fully fenced with a fence at least 4ft tall. A 6ft fence is recommended for dogs with a history of fence jumping. Fences that are not acceptable include split rail fences, snow fences, invisible fences, decorative garden fences, and poultry wire. ****
  3. Before letting the dog off-leash at the Sniffspot, you must check the fence. Walk along the fence line and look for gaps, holes, or damage where the dog could escape. Ensure the fence is at least 4 feet high at the lowest point.
  4. Look for potential hazards such as toxic plants, sharp objects, or anything else that could be dangerous for the dog. Also, check for other dogs, people, or animals in the space.
  5. Make sure the gate is securely closed and latched.
  6. After thoroughly checking the area, you may remove the dog's leash. It is important to supervise the dog(s) and not leave them unattended in the Sniffspot. Pay close attention as the dog explores the space for the first time. Make sure your dog isn't ingesting things such as mulch, rocks, sticks, etc., and be prepared to intervene if needed.

Examples of unsafe fences:

During winter, it's important to pay attention to the snowbanks near the fence and ensure that they're not too high next to it. If the snowbanks are too high, the dog may be able to jump over the fence.
