Please note: Outing duration and distraction tolerance will vary for each dog. Always be prepared to leave. Do not progress until the dog is successful at any given point
Goal: Teach the dog to normalize outings with the working experience. You may start taking the dog on your normal shopping outings.
During Module 4 Outings:
- If you are unfamiliar with the dog, be sure to establish a relationship before going in public. This time frame should be about a week.
- Start with shorter outings and continue to make them longer in duration as they mature
- Focus on quality over quantity. Each experience should be neutral or positive
- Exposure focus: The dog should be exposed to most things by now. Revisit previous Modules’ Exposure focus. Focus on making outings a normal occurrence.
- Training focus: The dog is responding to verbal cues without lures. Has continued to focus with very little or no reaction to distractions. Should be able to keep duration in a position such as sit, down, park, and under. Dogs should also start to learn how to settle into the environment.
